Dear Vocalisters,
Emerging from Lurk-mode. As one of the earlier members on both incarnations of this list, I remember that one big problem we have had in move to yahoogroups is the loss of our archives. If we are using a system already set up by the university (or anywhere else for that matter) we need to see how that will be handled. It takes a huge amount of space to archive our chatty group, and we say such important things that it is an enormous loss of information if we no longer have our old archive available or cannot keep a new one.
About an entry-portal webpage, you should know that vocalist.org, vocalist.info and vocalist.com are names that are already owned by others. To have some shortcut is possible (e.g. my own homepage has a very complicated URL but the shortcut is easy) and often free. Another name is probably not useful since we are known as VocaList....where else would you look for us?
As for academic vs commercial, I think this is a moot point. Just because a list is kept on the servers of a university means nothing. I am often surprised to find out where a list is managed. It just depends on who has the time and space, and the most reliable service.
As for spam, it will appear anyway. Any time you put your e-mail address on anything, it can and will be harvested.
Best wishes, Candace
