Debra:
I am the original question asker, and again I wish to thank Karen and John for their replies. Karen for the insight into the sequence of what should go on in the mind before the breath is *allowed*, and John for the suggestion that I should break a song down line by line or note by note if necessary.
Of the two, Karen's suggestions hit right on the core of vocal technique and I am pleased to report that because of her tips I was able to take a major step forward over this weekend. I seem to have found an image of the resonance space she wrote about into which I can sing. However during the relentless pressure of a song I definitely have difficulty in keeping up. During a rehearsal of a Mozart Mass we're doing this weekend I was able to apply Karen's ideas better during the longer breaks of music, and struggled when I had to allow air to come in when there is only a short rest between phrases.
At home, using John's tip about extracting myself from the tyranny of the accompaniment, I was able to relax and apply Karen's tips phrase by phrase, and sometimes note by note. Using this tip I was able to sing troublesome parts of some tenor arias that I usually get tied up in knots with when the piano cranks on.
Thanks again.
Best regards,
Bob.
