Just a few thoughts running through my head when I came across this post:
Audra McDonald was educated at Juilliard and has a BM in classical voice from this instituition which would lead me to believe that while she was there, she probably was involved in classical recital or opera in some way, although she has never been involved in these professionally.
I wonder if the pop singer Jewel has yet been mentioned. It is my understanding that she was on scholarship to the Interlochen Academy in Michigan and pursued classical training there. From what I have heard, she wanted to be an opera singer until she was told that it would take at least ten years to establish a career in this field. Two years later, she released her award winning debut CD "Pieces of You".
