lloyd,

if there is an optimum position of the vocal tract for each vowel and,
if diphthongs are a glide from one vowel sound to another, wouldn't that
glide be temporarily out of an optimum resonance? (i realize, of course,
that the speed that this is done at probably negates making this much of a
concern.)

i also wonder if the change in pressure, while actually phonating,
doesn't change either the actual posture of the vocal tract or, at least, the
perception of that posture. i also wonder if aiming for a static target
doesn't promote a stiffening of the walls of the vocal tract thereby,
changing its nature as a resonator.

as one might guess, the idea of reinforcing 'static' positions goes
against my sense of the dynamic of any kind of singing.
