To add to Karen's wonderful and comprehensive list of composers, and perhaps
falling under the catagory of "lesser" known composers who have set the 'Ave
Maria' is Franz Abt.
His setting is really quite lovely and definitely not very often heard.
I'm sure it could be easily adapted for a mezzo- in fact- the first time I
heard it, it was sung by a mezzo!!
