how do you think basses singing low notes get heard over an orchestra?
the reason, i think, for the classical practice of centering training for a
woman around head voice (although, i think a lot of it is closer to
falsetto), is that the repertiore expected of female classical singers is a
lot higher than most other music. i don't think it is practical to sing
this much higher range in a manner that is more oriented around one's
speaking voice ('chest' voice) the way basses and baritones do. look at the
stress placed on tenors who are expected to sing a higher percentage of their
music above their break than basses and baritones are. counter-tenors
resort to falsetto singing to accomodate and even higher range. and that's
what i think classical female singers do as well.
