caio,

the simple difference between 'mum' and 'bub', is the opening or
closing of the velar port. with the velar port open and the lips closed, if
the vocal folds are vibrated, the resultant sound will be an 'M'. with the
port open, the air used to vibrate the folds will escape through the nose.
if the port is closed, the air will build up in the oral cavity (commonly
known as 'the mouth') eventually exploding the lips open. the resultant
sound is known as the letter 'B'. if the velar port is open, sound
vibrations get into the nasal cavity and, as they are vibrations, will
vibrate those passages. if the velar port is closed, those vibrations are
not as free to enter the nasal passages. this is still true on the lowest
notes in one's range as well as in vocal fry and falsetto. it triggers
nothing.

the ancient greeks saw the consumption of wine as a way to enter the
realm of the gods, while the romans saw it as a great party drink. in my
opinion, the romans were right.
