lea ann,

first, singing too high in chest voice isn't the only way to hurt your
throat. your sore throat might be illness or misuse or both. as far as
'spin' is concerned, a lack of spin does not come from using chest voice
(after all, us low voiced males like to have some spin on our low notes).
the lack of spin comes from not allowing your folds to vibrate optimally.
most likely, you are pressing your breath on the high notes. this either
causes a breathy sound with much reduced volume or causes your larynx to
seize up causing a strangled sound. both have no spin.
