Mike anyone who joined up the pitches in his speech, as is needed in a legato singing line, would be accused of hitting the turps. And I totally DISagree with what you say about the speed of speaking needing less time to enunciate, than with singing. On the contrary, the efficiency of usage of the mechanism in singing enables even faster delivery with clarity, than most speech.
This difference, at least in classical singing, is what I meant when pointing out that there are also other ways of using the mouth that don't meet the essential usage of speech. These also, are VERY different. The duration of a consonant is minuscule in comparison with the vowel and performed skillfully, carry none of the tensions of most speech patterns.
