but lloyd,

anyone who has ever done stretching before a gym class, knows this.
in fact, i would compare singing from chest voice to head voice, to pnf
stretching (in pnf stretching, the muscles are contracted, then stretched
'out of that contraction'). while the muscles are engaged in pnf
stretching, that contraction cannot be increased during the stretch. the
same thing with singing. if the vocalis muscle is engaged while singing low
notes, if the folds are to be stretched for the higher notes, the vocalis
muscle cannot be further contracted (in fact, as you say, it must be
gradually relaxed).
