I believe the niggun is pretty much exclusive to the Chassidim, and not widely used among the other branches of Jews. I know it was Chassids who "invented" this form of musical prayer.
Interestingly, there is a very similar use of "nonsense" syllables in some of the singing that accompanies Hindu ragas.
