Thank you for all the circumstantial evidence that I believe indicates
that Tchaikovsky did, indeed, set the Russian and not the German.
Although not absolutely definitive, I think this evidence indicates, at
the very least, that singing the song in Russian would be absolutely
appropriate - so that's what I'll do. (Besides, I have an excellent
"coach" in the form of an exquisitely clearly pronounced recording by bass
Mark Reizen.)
