I found that the Pimsleur series of language tapes is one of the best for
a "get started" introduction to languages. I used them successfully to
"get started" with Italian and with Hebrew. Admittedly, they're somewhat
tourist oriented, but you do get a good grounding in how the grammar works
and in some basic vocabulary that's useful across the board.
