I don't think elementary school teachers really think "See Dick Run" is that interesting of a book, but it's a step on the way to being able to read more interesting literature later. You can't throw Anne Rice at a little kid and expect her to read it (nor would it be appropriate). I'm just saying I think the pop-style broadway stuff, a la RENT and the like, is stylistically inappropriate for the student. I never suggested making her sing "Alma del core" till she's blue in the face. I suggested the Kids' B'way Solos and my only comment about her choice was that she can't have EVERYTHING she wants. Walk before she can run.
