you are making an assumption that a normal breath is shallow. and, even if it were shallow, how long a phrase are you talking about. it is likely that you can talk just as long, on one breath, as any phrase you would ever sing. singing uses less breath than talking so, you would need even less breath for singing than speaking for an equal duration.
Singing uses LESS breathe than talking? Are you sure about that? Singing at full volume uses less breath than chatting at tea? It's not hard to test this theory....take a speaking breath and give yourself a full volume phrase of around 15 seconds...compare that to the same phrase done with a nice low full breath. No one said suck all the air in the universe in....sometimes you have a quarter rest to get a good sized low breath in that will sustain you for a long phrase.
