It is just the physical opening of your instrument, from the bottom to the top. Most people start with the opening of the throat. The process of training classical singing is basically expanding your awareness of singing being centered around the mouth to eventually involving your whole body, from your feet on the floor (appoggio) to the top of your head. The open column is merely the sensation (and physical reality) of your instrument being fully open, enough to sustain the enormous amount of chest and head you are pouring through it to get that large, "educated shouting", operatic sound.
