Joe: >Would you neccessary put italians in the same category as Latin origin? I hear it so much being recognised with hispanic people but with italians?( I am italian and I don't consider myself Latin)<
WHAAAAAT?????? Do you have national history classes in Italy, Joe? hehe You and I ( as my name tells on ) are more Latin than any Ricky Martin, who must be of Indian or black descent too, as his skin suggests, could ever be.
Italians are Latin, but not "Latinos", although "Spanish-speaking people" tends to be the first idea that pops up in their minds when they hear the word "Latin".
Latino is a Spanish word used in some regions of the US to refer to those from Latin America. In some other regions, they call them Hispanics. I find the term "Hispanic" completely wrong when used to refer to all Latin Americans, as there are countries here that were not colonized by Spaniards ( Brazil's territory is bigger than the US and was colonized originally by Portuguese people ), and there are two countries that have French as their official language. I know the American Immigration Department doesn't include us Brazilians under "Latino" either, but I think Americans in general would call us "Latinos" all together, as they assume we all speak the same language and look alike ( that just doesn't explain how come Gisele Bündchen, the top model, Guga Kuerten, the tennis player, late Ayrton Senna and Emerson Fittipaldi, the care racers, and Sepultura, the trash metal band, are Brazilian, but who cares? hehe ).
Best wishes,
Caio
