that's an excellent point. i think what prevents kids from doing so is they are under the impression that they should be behaving rather than playing, while they are singing in an organized situation. of course, it is a lot easier said than done to get children to channel their play through singing, especially if they are singing as a group.
i feel that most people have sounds they can already make that can be used to put their singing together with. the advantages of using sounds they can already make is that, they can already make the sound and, that the sound is 'natural' (habitual) to them. the process of singing is then an expression of that person's vocal history rather than something that always feels somewhat like a parasite.
