to look sauve and at ease onstage, one actually has to be sauve and at ease onstage. for those of us who are not born that way, it takes the experience of living there and accepting 'what you usually do' before you are rewarded with the feeling of belonging there. until that moment, you are flawed. the two choices are; admiting the flaw and turning it into a positive or, trying to hide it. if you choose to hide it, you have to wonder what you are hiding it with. that which you hide it with might be worse than the original flaw. in that light, it is better to say 'hey folks, i'm nervous tonight because, well...basically, i'm nervous every night', smile, get your laugh and move on. also, if you accept your nervousness or shyness, it is much easier to ignore it or, even forget it as you become more distracted by what you originally set out to do.
