Dear Terry, Peggy, Ian, Sharon and co-vocalisters,
The exercise I learned started with complete exhaling, followed by inhaling as slowly and deeply as possible, followed by exhaling as long as possible. What I did last time, was just inhaling (fast and deep) and then exhaling, which seems to be easier.
But Peggy and Ian already wrote a couple of lines, which gave me the idea that it might not be such a good idea to do these exercises. (My singing teacher does not give lessons at the moment, so I cannot ask her.)
I must say, I like Sharon's idea most, because it gives you immediately the right feeling. I think you can also use it to check yourself.
