Oh, mike, there you go getting philosophical again! To be sure, when we
sing, we are our own first (and probably biggest) consumers. Singing might
be a form of vocal narcissism. A singer has to enjoy his/her own voice, his
own performance, his own expression first before sharing it publically.
Audiences (except, of course for recordings) listen mostly with their eyes;
and can tell when the singer is enjoying performing for them. Singers sing
to themselves when no one else is listening. Personally, I suspect that it
is the sharing of that enjoyment that makes performances special-er. Both
the singer and the audience get to eat; and when it's magical, it's a banquet.
