Dear Carol,

The best way to learn to isolate the harmonics is to change from one
vowel to another slowly and notice where and when certain partials
pop out.

One thing that allows me to accentuate the harmonics instead of the
fundamental is to purse my lips in a whistling shape, and actually
attempt to whistle the harmonic tone while singing. The shape of your
mouth to create a whistle is going to be related to the shape to
create a harmonic at the same pitch (since it's all about resonant
chambers), so that's good practice, at least in my experience.
