In ecclesiastical Latin, the s's are voiceless.  I think I've seen Jesus spelled only "Jesu" in Latin.  But then it's Saturday night, I spent all day in commencement activities and my brain is mayonnaise.

In English choral music (British) Jesu is pronounced /'dZizu/ or /dZizju (jeezoo or jeezyou) and is correctly pronounced thus in the US.  I've never run into the pronunciation of "Jesus" which you describe.  Sounds to me that your director may have mixed up "Jesu" and "Jesus."

I say that if you're singing a solo at the early service you can sing any thing you want!  Just make sure it's gorgeous.

<On Mother's Day, I've been asked to sing what else but Ave Maria. On Thursday at choir practice, our extremely knowledgeable choir director corrected us on the pronunciation
of "Jesus", saying, "there is never a final "s" on Jesus, it is always pronounced "Jesu".<

<I had never heard this, even in the Catholic church back in Latin Mass days. Is there an exception for "Jesus" where the final "s" is silent and it's
just been kept secret from me all these years,  snip

I'm singing at the 8:30, so no one will really know or care, but me, snip Please tell me he was just
confused.< Laura Sharp
