Dear List:
Once again I'm asking a question I feel silly about! On Mother's Day, I've been asked to sing what else but Ave Maria. On Thursday at choir practice, our extremely knowledgeable choir director corrected us on the pronunciation of "Jesus", saying, "there is never a final "s" on Jesus, it is always pronounced "Jesu".
I had never heard this, even in the Catholic church back in Latin Mass days. Is there an exception for "Jesus" where the final "s" is silent and it's just been kept secret from me all these years, or did our esteemed director have a little brain cloud thing going on?
I'm singing at the 8:30, so no one will really know or care, but me, but I'd sure like to know. I looked at all sorts of ecclesiastic sites, including "Una Voce" but they all say that the "s" is voiced, there was no mention of "Jesus" being pronounced any differently. Please tell me he was just confused.
Thanks!
Laura Sharp
