One gorgeous song which might suit you is "Under the Fuschias" by Harry
Thacker Burleigh. It's not well known but is hauntingly beautiful and
extremely accessible. The text concerns forbidden love. There is one
other recording of it that I'm aware of, by Cynthia Haymon, on the CD
"Where the music comes from."
