Well, I'm not professional, although who knows, maybe one day....
But anyway, one simple way of hearing oneself a little better while
practicing is to sing facing a wall. The sound bounces back and
certainly sounds different to when you try to listen to yourself
otherwise.

Of course, a microphone and headphones are another way to hear
yourself, but the sound will very much depend on the microphone and
the amplification, not to mention the headphones themselves.

Last, but not least, it is nice to find a resonant room to sing in.
The better the resonance, the better the feedback to your ears. I like
to sing on my stairs - about half way up....like Kermit's nephew.
