The book you're thinking of is Richard Boldrey's GUIDE TO OPERATIC ROLES AND ARIAS. It costs $65 in paperback (which is why I've never quite been able to bring myself to buy it). Boldrey also has a much briefer GUIDE TO OPERATIC DUETS. Both great resources - but I just can't help balking at the price tag!
