Hi Lauren,
I happened to be on the phone with my dad when your question came through.
Norman Treigle. He apparently sang a lot with Beverly Sills, although his
voice was not quite as sumptuous as Ramey's. (that's according to my dad).

Hope that helps.

I need y'all's help....

I was having dinner tonight with my parents and their pal, Larry Foster, and
they were reminiscing about an American bass who sang Boito's Mefisofele in
Houston years ago with Julius Rudel. Supposedly there was a recording made.
They were saying he was a predecessor to Ramey, a gaunt fellow, who passed
away from cancer. He sang a lot with NY City Opera, but they said never
sang at the Met. Unfortunately no one could come up with a name....

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Please help!
