I read in an article by Jennifer Larmore (in an Opera America publication) a
strategy she used: When she was starting out, she called the Artistic
Director's assistants to ascertain if they would talk to an inquiring singer.
If they did, she talked to them and scheduled an audition in their city.
She spent the money to go there and sing, and she felt it was far more
effective: She was just one person rather than one of a cast of hundreds in
NY, and the Director had the time to devote to the audition and to her. She
had his or her undivided attention.
Another illustration that anything is possible if you put your mind to it,
think out of the box, and stay focused on what you want.
