peggy,

as a body uses energy, it requires oxygen. the heart pumps oxygen,
through the blood, to the body. so, the amount of energy being used has an
effect on how fast the heart beats. anaerobic exercise requires more oxygen
than aerobic exercise but, the oxygen is supplied after the activity as it is
not supplied during the activity which is why anaerobic activities can only
be sustained for very brief periods.

your second statement is incorrect. the greater the activity, the
greater the number of calories used (a calorie is a measure of energy). it
is thought that fat is used more as a fuel source during moderate exercise.
that does not mean that more calories are used during moderate exercise than
strenuous exercise. in strenuous exercise, the body requires more immediate
fuel sources such as ATP or glycogen.

further, bodies with a higher percentage of lean body mass burn more
calories at rest than those with a lower percentage of lean body mass. so,
marathon runners and basketball players not only use more energy while
engaged in their sports than an opera singer does while performing a major
role, they also burn more energy when they are all sitting on the couch
eating bon-bons.
