I, for one, didn't take it literally. And, frankly, she's singing Isolde and Brunhilde at the Met and other top opera houses internationally, and where are we singing, we who are "right" about running marathons and opera singing? The statement may not be accurate, but if she believes it and it's helped her accomplish what she's accomplished, who I am to say she's "wrong" to think it or even to write it?
And as far as marathons go, most golfers, basketball players, football players, hockey players don't run marathons either. But ordinary people like my non-jock (and rhythm-challenged, but nevertheless dear to me) brother-in-law do. There's nothing magic about a marathon, other than its classical associations.
