Leslie, Whether she is talented or not, you only get one life. What's the harm in taking 4 years to see if it can be a singer's life? A music degree is just fine as a prerequisite for law, among other advanced studies. She'll be 22 at the oldest when she graduates - time enough to work towards a long career in anything except gymnastics. I speak as one who bumbled aimlessly, somehow managing to graduate with a music degree at 32, worked in a music library ever since, and now at 43 (almost 44) can sing well enough to know that I could make it as a singer, but I do have a wife and two wee monsters, so coming home every day and a dental plan are quite attractive. Children are definitely time-consuming, but mine have given a new dimension to my life that I wouldn't be without. Definitely not a double major. Music demands one's attention as much as engineering or computer programming. Also, in that period between graduation and when the voice matures - that's the time to do other study, and accept singing gigs on the side. There! She might want to check the biographies of singers who have been able to do other things, and have a family too - many have. john
... She would love to have a crack at REEALLY performing-but we all know >you gotta have a day job........................Plus, she definitely wants a >husband and kids in her future. ... Her father (the >accountant, musically illiterate) is about to have a nervous breakdown over >this. Music Ed would be one thing, but she wants performance.
