You know, this may be changing the subject but maybe not...My teacher teaches a "lowering of the soft palate" technique for the lower register, which for me begins at theF above middle C, then down to the A below. Along with the lowering of the palate she tells me to "put some smile" into the vowel, sort of "brightening" the vowel. This gives a rich sound that has a lot of carrying power, yet doesn't feel the same to me as singing in chest did. I am wondering-is this a mix? Is it maybe a healthier way to sing chest? I was afraid that I would never again sing these notes after my surgery, since I seemed to have awakened in another octave...:-) but using this technique I can sing lower longer without straining.
