As the mother of 2 musically gifted children who have both whined and complained about lessons and practicing yet LOVE to perform...........I just told them at a young age that music lessons were part of our "religion" (not exactly an untruth, but that is another thread) and that they were required to be involved in at least 1 musical endeavour every school year-whether it was piano, band, or singing in a children's chorale. They both quit band, both quit piano (but the younger is starting back) but they have been dedicated to the chorale. There is so much to be gained from a musical education that may not pertain to performing, but makes for a well-rounded and educated individual. To insist on SOME type of musical endeavour is not pushing, the way I see it is that it is just as important as literature and algebra. After all, just because a kid dislikes math is not an excuse for dropping it in the 8th grade, is it? Maybe your son just needs to switch instruments.
This tack has worked for us............
