Karen, what happens if you sustain the Bizet B as you would do with the
Verdi? What happens if you do the whole final phrase much slower than the
actual tempo and legato? Taking note of these physical experiences and
trying to incorporate what's good about them into your "real-life" version
might help.

If you run into a freak-out about it because of the deadline & your
teacher's unavailability at this time, take heart in the fact that many
mezzos sort of slide up and tap that last note as if it were a siren or a
whoop. You could certainly make it work dramatically if you find that the
technique is still slightly eluding you.
