For what it's worth....
I heard that at The Washington Opera performance on
Wednesday evening (the premiere of Cosi fan tutte), the
orchestra played "American the Beautiful". I also heard it
performed during a new program on the radio today, and it
hit me as exactly the piece of music I wanted to be hearing
at this moment. I think the combination of the soothing
melody, the refined poetic text, and the phrase "God shed
his grace on thee" did it for me.
