In physics, at least, A4 is the A in the 4th piano octave, i.e., the A that equals 440Hz in American Standard pitch, and which used to equal 435Hz in the older International pitch standard. Middle C is the C in the fourth octave, and thus would be C4. The whole major octave starting with middle C and moving upwards would, thus, include:
C4 D4 E4 F4 G4 A4 B4 C5
C3 would be the C an octave below middle C, with G3 being the G above C3. C2 would be the C two octaves below middle C, with G2 being the G above C2.
The very highest note on an 88-key piano keyboard is C8.
The very lowest note is A0 (NOT A1), which means the G1 would be the G above the A0, NOT the G below it - and thus, would not be the G to the left of the lowest note on the piano keyboard - that G would be G0.
