Hello!
Well, first off, at the risk of upsetting anybody (I thought I'd get that out of the way first!)I think you've had of course excellent advice from Mike and Dr. Diane as always.
I think there could be two schools for thought here. One, a vocal coach, or a vocal teacher. I would consider that, if you study with someone who takes you through everything, lock, stock and barrel, then that could be said to be a vocal coach, whereas a teacher of voice could be someone who fixes techinique.
My very first teacher would give you a song or aria at the end of one lesson, and if that wasn't learnt by the next lesson, the piano lid was slammed down and you were told in no uncertain terms to stop wasting precious time!! Hard, but a great lesson. If, as I truly believe, you are, in the end, your own teacher. Now, I of course believe that you can learn lots of things from different people, but it has to be realised that the differences are paramount. Dr. Diane is right I think, when she says that it can be non useful to have to work on songs ie note bashing, when the time you have to try and instill some technique is often limited.
I do spend some time on music with my students, but mostly, it's trying to put right their voices I'm more concerned, and interested with.
My tuppence ha'penny worth as usual.
Ian Voice wrecker to the stars!
