I know what you're talking about--and unfortunately, you don't even have to be a spinto or dramatic to encounter it. I'm a big lyric, and I get that kind of criticism frequently in CT, where I live--but not in NY. At home, I've had conductors (baroque specialists), church choir directors and music club members call me a dramatic soprano, which I most assuredly am not. But compared to what they're used to hearing, I apparently sound like one. Go figure!
