wim and denis,
have either of you ever heard the metal band from norway, candlemass? the lead singer is kristian johanssen's son (the father had a reasonable good opera career in europe). the son trained as an opera singer and then decided to pursue singing in a rock band instead. his singing is very obviously operatic and, to quite a few metal aficionados, sounds pretty silly. there are, of course, those metal fans who like his singing.
of all the pop styles, i think metal is the one most likely to tolerate that which resembles the operatic. in most of the other styles, a larynx that floats up with the pitch produces the desired timbre. however, in most cases, it does not need to move as much as some think in order to produce the desired results.
