"Si canta come si parla" probably only works for people who have
flawless speaking habits, as it is my experience that it is
often their bad speaking habits which prevent people from developing
as a singer. Only if you speak with full, resonant vowels (and
consonants !), sort of like a stage actor, you are in the luxury of
not having to re-think all your vowels and consonants when
learning to sing, but maybe the old Italians were indeed referring
to 'stage speech' when they came up with this advice :)
