I'm a bit puzzled about the distinction you make between Natalie
Cole and Christina Aguilera. Like you I also prefer to listen to
Natalie Cole. Aguilera's voice to me sounds less 'polished', but I
guess that's exactly how she wants to sound and thus it seems to me
this is rather a matter of style/taste than one of technique.
I don't think any of them can be said to use more than a bare
minimum of technique borrowed from the bel canto tradition.
