I just did a term paper on this subject. I feel so informed. :)
After listening to the CD and reading the score 20 times or so, I feel I
know it pretty well. I think as long as you've got a confident lady with a
VERY expressive and dramatic voice and a group of instrumentalists who can
back it up that you'll have a great show. I think the poetry needs to be
approached with sincerity, the piece really does convey insanity and that's
the point...not a mockery of weirdness.
The reciter is typically costumed as columbine, and I've heard that some
people do clown makeup - pierrot on one side of the face and columbine as
the other. I think it would be neat to have a minimal set with low lighting
in strange shapes...
Although I was not there to witness it, a few years ago Dr. Edith Diggory
performed it at Oakland University (my school). She promotes "different"
vocal music and I'm sure she would be happy to talk to you about her
