Personally, I think the best-made point about humans on Earth was in the movie, "The Matrix", when the alien "overseer" whined about being here so long but after observing us all that time he had come to the conclusion we are not mammals, we are a virus.

as long as we're on such earth shattering subjects so near and dear to our hearts, i thought i would toss this idea out (hey! maybe it'll get me banned from vocalist...).
anyway, about ten years ago, i saw a segment of one of those midweek 60minutes clones covering the rabbit problem in australia. the rabbit is not indigenous to australia so, it has no natural enemies (although, i'll bet if you put a bunch of them out on the reef, the sharks would break down and adapt). rabbits, with their gift for rampant fornication, reproduce...uh...well, they reproduce like rabbits, so, there are tons and tons of them and their numbers are out of control, causing all sorts of 'rodent' problems.
similarly, some kind of snake has made it big on the island of guam (i can't remember what kind of snake it is and, i think it was first brought over as a pet). the snakes have gotten loose, reproduced and are helping themselves to large helpings of the islands songbirds.
here in the south, the japanese botanical equivalent to the chandra levy story, kudzu, is spreading itself everywhere (however, in the nine years since i have been here, the growth seems to have faded. i believe the menace has been halted by over development).
the ultimate point of this post is to compare the spread of human beings all over the planet, seemingly without natural enemy, living beyond the support of its environment (at least, compared to other species who live 'in balance' with their environment), to these other introduced species who have posed similar problems to the areas they have been introduced.
as this is just speculation, it goes without saying that guessing who introduced our species would also be speculation. one would also have to wonder if that includes all humans or just europeans as, native americans, primitive tribes in south america, new guinea, etc. seem to be able to live 'in balance' with their surrounding environments.
perhaps, the design is not meant to go on and on and we are the species sent to bat clean-up.
