christine,
something else that i have found to work is to have my students doing a genteel popping (without pitch) of their folds (i believe vennard had his students doing this). i try to get them to feel as if the area being used to make this sound is about the size of a sesame seed.
what remains as a difficult task, is to have the students realize that a fairly large sound can be made easily through the coordination of a few parts and that, the effort does not have to mirror the results. similarly, golfers who can't hit the ball far have a hard time realizing that relaxed muscles move faster than tense muscles (tense muscles loosing the speed of contraction as the contraction has already been 'fired').
