I think perhaps the bride and groom should be
consulted on what they want, even if they can just
give general parameters (e.g. sacred/secular,
English/not English, etc.). I sang at a wedding last
week, and they specifically requested something in a
foreign language that was romantic. I sang Du bist die
ruh, and before I sang I gave a translation of the
lyrics so people would understand. It went over really
well (and I got a great comment from the German
Justice of the Peace who said she understood every
word!).
