Dear Hild and co-vocalisters,
According to his book on Schubert Lieder, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau thinks the Op.62 nr. 4 (D877/4) is the best. Of course Schubert thought so too, because he kept working on the poem for eleven years, till he finally composed this one. Not that it matters, but I do agree with them.
By the way: do you know the original opus D877/4 was a (pseudo-) duet for soprano/tenor? But soon after this one Schubert wrote a solo version, so you do have the choice. The solo version is more intimate, the duet version is more according to the text of the Goethes novel. If you want to find all versions, check the Urtext versions (Bärenreiter) for Goethe Lieder, there are only three publications on Goethe texts in the series. The other Mignon songs also come in at least two versions.
Arleen Augér recorded both the D481 and the D877/4 versions. If you ever come in Holland, go to a drugstore called Kruidvat and ask for the Schubert box (they hide them). It is about $ 12, and contains 7 Schubert cd's: besides this Auger-cd, there are Fischer-Dieskau, Peter Schreier, Gundula Janowitz, Sarah Walker, Robert Holl and John Shirley-Quirk. These are not the best recordings of those artists, but this makes it even more interesting, I think.
Best greetings,
Dré
