Subject:  taping and accepting one's voice

how often do we hear someone singing something they shouldn't? some
high baritone taking a crack at 'wintersturme' or a soubrette wailing away at
'un bel di'? to them, in a small, echoey practice room they sound great.
to a tape recorder, they sound more like a three year old boy wearing his
dad's shoes, thinking he looks just like dear old dad. cute in a kid, sad
in an adult singer. sad because, instead of working hard getting nowhere at
something they are ill-suited too, they could be making great strides and
breakthroughs at something they are well suited to. if what they are well
suited to isn't going so well, they need to face the fact that they need to
go elsewhere for advice or worse, realize they are not that good and that
just wanting it, doesn't make it so.
