Re: The Parsimonious Composer
Two possible explanations you didn't mention:
1) He considers the musicians who are paid to perform his music no different than the plumber who is paid to fix his faucets. Just as there are some people who would never think to compliment the plumber on a job well done - it's what he's paid for, after all - there may be others who don't think it's necessary (or worse don't even think at all) to compliment musicians who are just doing their job.
2) Perhaps the composer understands that compliments to musicians are always considered suspect by those musicians (what we've been talking about here). Indeed, perhaps he's been on the receiving end of so many suspect compliments himself (particularly those from critics who compliment him to his face, then trash him in print), that he has decided it's better not to say anything at all than to say something that might be mistrusted. Of course, "thank you" is not a phrase that would be likely to be mistrusted...and it's rather a shame that he chose total silence rather than as non-committal yet pleasant an expression.
Third possibility, of course, is that he's just a curmudgeon.
