It may be odd, but what about songs by American composers in other
languages? Like Barber's Melodies Passageres, or any number of German
songs by Griffes, Ives, etc.

Maybe if you found something you can really sink your teeth into
vocally, you won't feel so bad about the language. Get something good
and operatic like Griffes' "Lament of Ian the Proud."
